On My Mind

video preview

There’s a gap most of us don’t notice until it starts to bother us.

The gap between who we are… and who we show.

This week on the podcast, I sat down with Alan Lazaros, founder of Next Level University. His story includes early loss and a near-fatal car accident at 26 that forced him to reevaluate everything.

From the outside, he was doing what most of us are taught to do.

Get the degree. Build the career. Make good money.

But internally, something wasn’t adding up.

That moment became a turning point not because everything changed overnight, but because he realized he had been building his life from the outside in instead of the inside out.

And here’s the part that’s hard to ignore: As Alan points out, “you are so focused on looking good rather than getting better… that you actually aren’t looking good eventually because you’re not getting better.”

That shows up in more places than we’d like to admit.

You can look like you have it together and still feel off.

You can be doing all the “right” things and still feel like you’re missing something.

Because the real scoreboard isn’t public.

It’s whether you respect how you’re showing up.

It’s whether you’re actually improving.

It’s whether your life works when no one else is watching.

Stop Chasing Perception

Why it Matters

If your energy goes toward looking successful instead of becoming capable, you eventually run out of runway. The image can’t carry you forever.

Why it Works

Growth compounds quietly. When you focus on substance first, perception eventually catches up without you forcing it.

How to Do It

  • Identify where you’re optimizing for visibility instead of progress
  • Shift effort toward things that make you better, not just busier
  • Measure progress by inputs you control, not reactions you don’t
  • Build habits that would matter even if no one ever saw them

Pro Tip

Pick one area where you’ve been “performing” and remove the audience entirely for 30 days. No posting. No sharing. Just improvement. See what changes.

The 80/20 Reality Filter

Spend 80% of your time making your real life great.

Spend 20% making it look great.

Most people flip that without realizing it.

Why it Matters

As a dad, your kids don’t experience your highlight reel. They experience your presence. Your attention. Your consistency.

If most of your energy is going toward how things look, they feel the gap.

Why it Works

It forces alignment between what matters and where your time goes. You can’t fake being present at home.

How to Use It

Look at your week through two lenses: real life vs perceived life.

  • Real life: time with family, health, meaningful work, being present
  • Perceived life: social media, appearances, validation loops

Reallocate toward what your family actually experiences

Pro Tip

Ask yourself: “If my kids only judged me by how I showed up this week, what would they say?” Then adjust accordingly.

Time to Sprint: The Character Check

Why it Matters

The gap between perception and reality doesn’t close on its own. It widens slowly over time. This sprint helps you catch it early.

Why it Works

Clarity creates action. When you name the gap, you can actually do something about it.

Minutes 0–10: Spot the Gap

Write down 2–3 areas where your life might look better than it actually is. Be specific.

Examples:

  • Work looks productive, but you’re avoiding the hard conversations
  • You look present at home, but you’re distracted or half-engaged
  • You appear disciplined, but your habits are inconsistent behind the scenes
  • You talk about goals, but aren’t taking meaningful steps toward them

Then ask: Where is the gap between perception and reality?

Minutes 10–15: Close One Gap

Pick one area and take a real action that improves reality.

Not something visible. Something meaningful.

Examples:

  • Have the conversation you’ve been avoiding
  • Put your phone away for an hour and be fully present
  • Do the work you’ve been procrastinating on
  • Fix something that’s been quietly bothering you

Minutes 15–20: Reset the Standard

Define what “getting better” looks like this week in one sentence.

Make it specific. Make it measurable.

Pro Tip

If you’re unsure whether something is real growth or just performance, ask: “Would I still do this if no one ever knew?” If the answer is no, you’ve got your answer.

Your Move

Where in your life are you most tempted to prioritize how things look over how they actually are? Hit reply and let me know. I read every response.

Continue the Conversation

It’s easy to assume that success and fulfillment move together. This conversation challenges that assumption.

Alan breaks down what it looks like to build a life that checks all the boxes externally, while still feeling misaligned internally. He explains how that gap forms, why it’s so common, and what it takes to close it.

We also get into the tension between reputation and character, and why most people spend too much time managing one at the expense of the other. Alan said, “You have a thousand reputations. You only have one character.”

If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing everything right but something still feels off, this episode will resonate.
