On My Mind

video preview

You can build a life that looks great on paper… and still feel like something’s missing.

This week on Gap to Gig, I sat down with Paul Comfort, author of Find Your X Factor and someone who’s reached the top of multiple careers across government, transportation, and media.

And yet, early on, he felt it, too.

That quiet disconnect between success and fulfillment.

At one point, Paul said: “I ended up staying in a job for several years, just for the money, and it was soul draining.”

Perhaps now more than ever, a lot of dads are in that exact spot right now.

Stable job. Good income. Respect at work.

And still…

You catch yourself wondering, Is this really it?

Paul’s take is simple but uncomfortable: it’s not that something is wrong with you.

It’s that something is misaligned.

The X Factor Framework

Paul breaks it down simply: “Your interest and abilities where they intersect… that’s the sweet spot for you.”

Why it Matters

Most advice tells you to follow your passion. That’s only half the equation.

Passion without ability leads to frustration.

Ability without interest leads to burnout.

You need both.

Why it Works

When you’re in that intersection:

  • You feel energized instead of drained
  • Time moves faster
  • Progress comes more naturally

It fits how you’re wired.

How to Do It

Start with two lists:

1. What energizes you

What would you choose to do with your time?

2. What you’re actually good at

Where do people consistently trust or praise you?

Then look for overlap.

That’s your starting point.

Pro Tip

If something makes you lose track of time and people consistently say you’re good at it, that’s not random. That’s a signal.

Stop Chasing and Start Integrating

You don’t need to start over to feel better about your work.

Why it Matters

A lot of dads think the only options are stay stuck or blow everything up.

Neither is ideal.

Why it Works

Paul didn’t abandon what he loved. He brought it into his work.

“I was able to put into that job what I loved.”

Public communication. Connecting people. Sharing ideas. Those threads showed up in every role he had.

How to Use It

Ask yourself:

  • What part of my work do I enjoy the most?
  • What part of my life outside work gives me energy?
  • Where can those overlap, even a little?

Then act:

  • Volunteer for something
  • Lead something
  • Create something inside your role

Pro Tip

You don’t need permission to start showing up differently. Small shifts inside your current role can quickly change how your work feels.

Time to Sprint: The 3-Part Career Check

You don’t need a full life reset.

Start with 25 minutes.

Why it Matters

Most people stay stuck because they never pause long enough to think clearly.

Minutes 0–10: What’s Draining You?

Write down:

  • What parts of your work feel heavy?
  • When are you just getting through the day?

Be honest.

Minutes 11–20: What Energizes You?

Think beyond your job.

“When you come away, you feel energized. Time seems to fly.”

Where does this happen for you?

Minutes 20–25: Where’s the Overlap?

Ask yourself:

  • Can I bring more of that into my current role?
  • Is there one small way to test this?

Pick one action and do it this week.

Pro Tip

Don’t wait for clarity. Take a step. Clarity follows action.

Your Move

Where in your current work do you feel most like yourself? Hit reply and let me know. I read every response.

Continue the Conversation

This week’s conversation with Paul Comfort gets at something a lot of dads feel but don’t always say out loud.

From the outside, things look solid. Stable job. Good income. A career you’ve built over years.

But internally, something feels off.

Paul shares his own experience of reaching that point and what he learned about why success and fulfillment can drift apart. We also dig into his “X Factor” framework, which helps you identify where your interests and abilities actually align, and how to move toward work that fits who you are without blowing everything up.

If you’ve ever caught yourself wondering, “Is this really what I want to be doing?” this one will hit close to home.
